Summarize YouTube Video with Gemini: Steps and Limits
Gemini can look up a YouTube video itself and summarize it, so there is no transcript to copy. The catch is the setup: Google requires you to be signed in with Activity switched on.
If you want to summarize a YouTube video with Gemini, the good news is that it does the fetching. That is the main difference from a general chatbot, where the usual method is to paste the transcript into ChatGPT yourself. With Gemini you name or link the video and ask.
Everything below about requirements and limits comes from Google's own help page, checked in September 2026. Where Google's documentation is silent, this page says so rather than filling the gap.
What you need before you start
Google's help page for finding and asking about YouTube content in Gemini lists two requirements. Both are simple, and the second is the one people trip over.
- Be signed in to the Gemini app. There is no signed-out route.
- Keep Activity on. Google's wording is that the feature "isn't available when this setting is off".
If you keep Activity off on purpose, that is a reasonable choice, and it means this method is not available to you. It is worth knowing before you spend ten minutes wondering why Gemini will not engage with the video.
Steps to summarize YouTube video with Gemini
- Open Gemini on the web or in the app, signed in.
- Check Activity is on in your Gemini settings.
- Point it at the video. Paste the YouTube link into your message, or ask Gemini to find videos on a topic first.
- Ask for the summary. Google's own example is finding videos and then asking it to "Summarize the first video".
- Follow up with narrower questions about the parts that matter to you.
Pasting the link is the direct route most people use. The find-then-ask route in Google's example is handy when you do not have a specific video yet and want Gemini to choose one.
Prompts that give better output
"Summarize this" works, and it tends to give you a generic overview. Asking for a shape gets you something you can actually use.

None of these make the answer more accurate by themselves. They make it more specific, which makes it easier to spot when something is wrong. Asking for times is the most useful of the five, because it turns every claim into something you can check in under a minute.
What Google says Gemini can't do here
The help page is unusually direct about the boundaries. It cannot show a complete list of your watch history, liked videos, saved playlists or subscriptions. It cannot take actions on YouTube for you, such as saving a video to a playlist or posting a comment.
The feature also is not available in Gemini Live chats or in Gemini inside Google Messages. You can connect the YouTube app for personalised results based on your YouTube history, and that is optional.
What the page does not say is just as useful to know. It does not state a maximum video length or a language list, and it does not say whether Gemini works from the captions, the audio or the picture. We will not guess — if a video matters, test it on that video.
Gemini, a pasted transcript, or a summarizer
There are three reasonable routes to the same goal, and each suits a different person. The right one depends less on output quality than on what you are willing to set up.

When Gemini is the better choice
You want a conversation. A summary, then "go deeper on the second point", then "what did they say about cost". Gemini does that and we do not.
You do not have a video yet. Asking Gemini to find something on a topic and summarize the best candidate is a genuinely useful workflow.
You already live in Google's apps and have Activity on anyway. There is no extra cost to you and no new tool to learn.
The video is long or not in English. Our free tier stops at 30 minutes and reads English only. Google does not publish a length cap or language list for this feature, so Gemini is worth trying on the videos we would turn away.
When a dedicated summarizer is simpler
You do not want to sign in, or you keep Activity off. Paste a link into the summarizer and nothing is tied to an account.

Checking what it tells you
Every AI summary is a paraphrase, and paraphrase is where errors hide. Numbers, names and anything phrased as a firm recommendation are the usual casualties.
So before you repeat anything from a Gemini summary, ask where in the video it was said and go and listen to that moment. It takes thirty seconds and it is the only check that actually works.
Follow-up questions help here too, as long as you use them to test rather than to confirm. "Where exactly does the speaker say that?" is a better second question than "tell me more about that", because it gives you something to verify. If Gemini cannot point to a moment, treat the claim as unconfirmed.
