People arrive at "Glasp alternative" from two quite different places, and the right answer depends on which one you are.

Some want a lighter way to get a summary out of a video. Others want a different highlighting and annotation system, because that is what Glasp actually is — its own site describes it as a browser extension that highlights YouTube videos, showing the transcript beside the video so a highlighted line is stored with its timestamp.

The fourth row is the structural difference. Glasp is largely a pipe to a model of your choosing, which is a design decision with real advantages and real costs.

Bring-your-own-model, weighed honestly

What it gets you: choice. If you prefer a particular model, or your organisation has settled on one, routing through it is genuinely better than being handed whatever a vendor picked. You can also switch when something better appears, without changing tools.

What it costs: steps, and a second account. The flow involves the extension and the model's interface, which is more moving parts than pasting a link. For one video, that overhead is the entire interaction.

Where it genuinely wins: when the summary should be about the parts you marked rather than the video as a whole. Glasp's own description of its AI summaries is that they use the passages you highlighted as context. Nothing here does that, and for close reading it is a real capability.

When to stay with Glasp

You highlight as you read. If marking passages is already how you work, an extension that captures highlights with timestamps across the web is doing something no summarizer replaces.

You want highlights, not summaries. Different artefact entirely — your selections in your words' order, rather than a paraphrase of the whole.

You use its export destinations. Highlights flowing into Notion, Obsidian or Roam with timestamps intact is a workflow worth keeping.

You want the same tool across articles and video. Glasp covers web pages and PDFs too; this covers YouTube only.

When a plain summarizer is the better fit

You are not going to highlight. Most people watching a talk to find out what is in it are not going to sit and mark passages. If that is you, the highlighting architecture is overhead without benefit.

You do not want a browser extension. An extension has access to pages you visit, which some people and many IT departments are reasonably careful about. A web page you paste a link into does not.

You want one step. Paste, read, close. No connected model, no installation.

You want a summary of the whole video rather than of what you marked. That is the ordinary case, and it is what summarizing a video normally means.

Two artefacts, not two qualities

The comparison is frequently framed as which tool summarizes better. That framing does not survive contact with what each actually produces.

A highlight set is your selections, in the order they appeared, in the speaker's own words. It is a record of what struck you. A summary is a paraphrase of the whole thing, in someone else's words, organised by what the video covered rather than by what you noticed.

Those answer different questions. "What did I find interesting in this" and "what is in this" are not the same request, and a tool optimised for one is not a worse version of the other.

This is why choosing a tool in this category should start from what you want to end up holding, rather than from feature counts. Most disappointment here comes from picking a product built around a different artefact than the one you wanted.

The limits neither escapes

Both work from the transcript, so both inherit the same ceiling — and it is worth being clear that switching between them fixes none of this.

No captions, no output. Glasp's transcript extraction and our summarizing both depend on YouTube having produced a caption track.

Nothing visual. Highlighting a transcript line about a diagram does not capture the diagram.

No speaker labels. Automatic captions carry none, so who said what is inferred in both tools.

Caption errors propagate. A highlighted line that was misheard is still misheard, and a highlight arguably makes it look more authoritative — caption accuracy sets the ceiling for everything downstream.

Neither knows what it missed. A transcript with a gap in it produces a summary or a highlight set with the same gap, and nothing in either output marks the absence. That is worth remembering before treating a highlight as proof a speaker said something in a particular way.

  1. Ask whether you highlight. Honestly — not whether you would like to. This settles most of it.
  2. Count the steps each takes to get a summary of one video.
  3. Check where the output goes and whether timestamps survive the trip.
  4. Decide about the extension — whether installing one is something you or your employer are comfortable with.

Both have free entry points, so this is testable rather than arguable, which is the only comparison worth much.

A reasonable arrangement

These are not mutually exclusive, and the people who get the most out of either tend to use both for different passes over the same material.

Summarize first, to decide whether a video deserves attention at all. That takes two minutes and rules out most of what you were going to watch.

Then highlight during the videos that survived, because that is when marking passages pays — you are reading closely and your selections mean something. Highlighting everything you encounter produces a large collection of marked text you never revisit, which is the same failure mode as summarizing everything.
